How To Find Out What Your Child Did At School Today!

Daily we ask our children the question, “What did you do at school today?” Without taking the time to process they quickly respond with “"I don't remember” or “Nothing". These common responses can make you crazy because you know your child did something! Many children need time to process their day before sharing what they did. Start out your conversation with a “Hi! Welcome home! I'd love to hear about your day”. Be sure to ask questions that lead to an answer not just a yes or no response. If you are looking for more than the typical short answer then here are some engaging questions you can ask your child that will promote dialogue and give you a picture of what occurred during their day at school.

What made you smile today?

What was the book about that your teacher read?

What was the nicest thing someone did for you today?

What sight word or letter did you learn today?

What did you do that was creative?

What is the best thing that happened today?

Did you help anyone today?

Who did you sit with at snack/lunch today?

Was anyone absent from your class?

Who did you play with today?

What rules are different at school than at home?

What are you excited to do at school tomorrow?

What is something you saw that made you think?

Tell me something that you know today that you didn’t know yesterday.

When did you feel proud of yourself today?

What is something that challenged you?

Enjoy the moment. See what type of dialogue and stories transpire.
